Base-20

Vigesimal

That's a word (I think a Latin word) that means 20 (in base 10).  So because the English used base 10 & they followed the Latin when naming things - we have this word for the technical name of a radix of 20 (base-20) numbering system.  Which the Kaktovik number system is - base 20 with a radix of 20.

And using this Kaktovik system the symbols for the radix is - 10!  Twenty.

Oh - and the proper name for a "base" is radix.  But few people use the term - maybe only mathematicians.

Every body uses Base-10

There are nice little inside jokes when one starts to explore multiple number systems that use different (radix) bases.  One common pun is that all bases are base-10!  And this is true - view from the perspective of the culture that uses that base.  As Eienstine said - it's All Relative!

To get very specific about number system bases - watch this: A base-neutral system for naming numbering systems.

Best Numbers!

If you are a beginner with the Kaktovik numbers please watch this video by Arifexian: Why These are the Best Numbers!  It is a great explainer video for the typical (base-10) interested person who wants to discover a better system.

And there is more generalized info in the Follow Up video.

Back ground on Bases

Artifexain goes into the backstory in this video on Inventing a Number System.  I enjoyed the exploration of the symmetry in the Hindu-Arabic numerals and other creative flourishes.

Backstory on Kaktovik

Here is also a nice little video about the backstory of the creation of the Kaktovik Numerals in the town of Kaktovik, Alaska.  The objectives of the students in creating the symbols of their numbers are:  simple, iconic, efficient, distinctive, and aesthetic.
